Indoor Pool Cost

It’s often the first question we receive when speaking to families—how much does an indoor swimming pool cost? The truth is, it depends entirely on the size and style of your project and whether you choose from our range of popular models or are considering a bespoke design.

Our indoor pools range from approximately £373,500 to £675,000, and costs can exceed this based on your chosen specifications. Factors such as the size of the pool, finishes, fixtures, and optional features like changing rooms, saunas, gyms or kitchens will influence the final price.

Whether you're drawn to one of our popular models or a fully bespoke design, we’ll collaborate closely with you to ensure your vision suits you, your family and your lifestyle. If you have a set budget, we will advise you on what’s possible, making sure the project stays within your cost limit.

Our team of architects, designers and builders have over 40 years of experience in swimming pool installations and are on hand to manage the entire build process, from concept to completion.

What goes into calculating the cost?

It’s easy to assume that there are only two components required for an indoor pool;

1) A swimming pool (hole in the ground with water)

2) A building to cover the pool (simple roof and walls)

However, the reality is far more complex. When introducing a sizeable body of warm water into a confined space, such as a pool chamber, architects and designers face unique challenges that require specialised knowledge and expertise. Unlike typical domestic building projects, indoor swimming pools require careful consideration of three major areas: pool chamber construction and circulation, environmental control systems & building envelope and structures.

Building Envelope and Structures

Many will be surprised to learn that there isn’t a ‘British architect standard’ or an ‘approved/regulated guide’ for constructing a pool building that can survive ultra-high humidity. A quick web search of ‘indoor pool building and problems’ will educate you on how easily things can go wrong and the scale of the risks when they do.

When it comes to the building envelope and structure, careful attention must be paid to material selection, insulation and vapour barrier design to ensure it will withstand high humidity levels and corrosion. Unlike typical dwellings, indoor pool buildings require robust construction methods and materials to ensure longevity and durability. Although they’re often more expensive to buy and install, they enable Origin to design, build, and guarantee their buildings with total confidence.

Environmental Control Systems

An indoor pool requires more than just the pool chamber, cover, and circulation equipment. You must also have a specialist swimming pool environmental control system that manages the air temperature, humidity and ventilation to avoid condensation, mould growth or structural issues.

Not correctly managing the environment within an indoor pool can lead to;

  • Poor or unpleasant air quality and an increased risk of respiratory infections and skin irritations.
  • Corrosion, deterioration or structural damage.

Without proper environmental management, metal fixtures, equipment and building materials can corrode and deteriorate. This can present as rotting wood, mould growth and peeling paint—effectively, a lot of cosmetic issues. However, hiding beneath this is the risk of deteriorating roof and wall structures.

Pool Chamber Construction and Circulation

First and foremost, the pool chamber and circulation system must prioritise safety, water quality and energy efficiency to provide an enjoyable swimming experience for pool users.

This is achieved through:

  • Compliance with relevant codes and regulations to ensure a safe swimming environment.
  • Proper filtration and treatment systems to maintain water quality and reduce the risk of waterborne bacteria.
  • Efficient circulation systems to minimise energy consumption and operational costs while keeping the pool water clean and inviting.

Other aspects affecting costs that are often overlooked

Indoor pool buildings are typically single-storey and tend to cover a comparatively large area this results in disproportionately higher build costs per square ft/m2 for both the foundations and roofing costs as they don’t benefit from covering multiple floors with one roof and one foundation design.

Built to Last

Origin’s designs are permanent structures that can’t be compared to the widely available lightweight garden pod assemblies. Our heavy-weight construction includes concrete foundations, block and beam flooring, heavy-duty timber frame construction, vapour control barriers, high levels of insulation and the latest glazing technology.

Additionally, each pool building is designed and constructed to comply with stringent Building Regulations.

Other items the regulations cover are:

  • Structural integrity
  • Energy efficiency
  • Ventilation and air quality
  • Water efficiency
  • Health and sanitation
  • Electrical safety

Heating

Don’t overlook the heating method of your indoor swimming pool. In previous years, a simple gas boiler was a common choice for clients. Still, with recent changes and rising costs, it’s important to consider low-carbon alternatives, not only for the long-term running costs of your pool but also for environmental factors.

We recommend finding someone who can give you the upfront cost of a renewable heating system and provide a return on investment (ROI) report to aid your decision, as every home is different. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to renewable heating schemes, however the experts at Origin will help find the heating method that works for you.
